So I found out about windowfarms a few weeks ago thanks to Gene and him always watching TED Talks. One of the founders of our.Windowfarms, Britta Riley, gave a TED Talk (found here) about the system she and her friend came up with of growing plants in her apartment.
I fell in love with the idea. For a long time now I’ve wanted to grow my own plants once I have my own place. The idea of a window farm is so awesome and perfect for an apartment! I really want to try this out when I have my own apartment.
It may be a bit expensive at first (to buy a window farm set from the above site costs roughly $120 plus the costs of seeds and nutrients) but I think it could be an amazing and fulfilling experience.
From what I’ve read so far, you don’t need much dirt (maybe none at all), but instead the system uses water and nutrients (and a careful watch of the pH balance) to help the plants to grow.
Depending on where you are located, you could grow plants like lettuce, basil, cherry tomatoes, and strawberries!
I obviously need to do more research but I’m excited for the prospect of growing my own food. And I think the windowfarm kits you can buy are so gorgeous. Makes me even happier knowing that growing food in my home won’t be ugly! Hehe.
I hope you guys look into it as well, you might find it to be an activity you’d like to do too!
