Weekend adventure: Can’t Stop the Serenity

2013-06-24 21.14.32This past Saturday night, Gene and I attended an event called Can’t Stop the Serenity. It’s a yearly event, in multiple cities, that raises money for a charity called Equality Now. Equality Now helps women and girls around the world gain the human rights they were born with. Each year, the movie, Serenity, is shown.

Gene and I heard about this event when we went to Denver Comic Con, and we were immediately interested since we both love Firefly and both support women’s rights (obv).

It was a pretty fun night. We got there at 9pm and waited around until a bit before 10 when we got to go into the theater and watch Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog as a little opening movie. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed Dr. Horrible. Many of the audience members sang along with the songs. It was so inspiring to me for some reason. Geek unity touches my heart I guess. 🙂

After Dr. Horrible was over we watched Serenity. If you have not seen Firefly, the TV series, or Serenity, the movie that eventually followed the series, then stop what you’re doing (please) and go watch them. Seriously. This post will be here when you get back. Go watch.

I hadn’t seen the movie in years so it was fairly new to me. It’s a good movie, but I like the tv show way better. After the movie they raffled off the items. And guess what, I won something! I won a spray painted painting of Mal Reynolds. Although, to be honest, it looks a bit more like the doctor, Simon, than Mal. Either way, I am super thrilled that I won an item with the one ticket I had! Pretty awesome.

We’ll probably go back again to this event. I loved seeing people dressed up as the characters. And it’s always so nice to see other people who enjoy something that I enjoy as well.

As we were leaving for the night we got fortune cookies with fortunes relating to the movie. Mine was “I am a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar.”

Such a fantastic quote. Very powerful and intriguing. And that is what I will leave you with.

“I am a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar.” -Wash
