Day 29. Monsters University.

This past weekend, Gene and I watched Monsters University at the discount theater. Only $2.50 a ticket before 6 pm, $3.50 after 6. Fantastic deal, right?! I had heard from one of my friends that the movie wasn’t that great, but I still wanted to see it because it’s the monsters from Monsters INC!

I’m very glad I only spent $2.50 on it (plus popcorn cause I was really craving it). When I walked out of the theater I thought the movie was okay. But now that it’s had a bit of time to digest in my head, I’m disappointed.

A sequel/companion movie to Monsters INC could have been great. Monsters INC revolved around such an interesting concept that I feel there should have been plenty of avenues to explore for the second movie. I can understand why the producers wouldn’t want to include Boo in the second movie, but, I really wish they had. I wish she had been a central part of the story again. She could have been in elementary school or even an adult. She could have found her way back to the monsters’ world or Mike and Sully could have found their way to her.

I feel like Monsters University lost the child aspect to it. Children don’t care about college. They don’t know anything about it. And they don’t need to. This movie was just a regular, stupid, college movie, but animated. The jokes were juvenile and not that funny. It was fairly predictable. It’s been done and it did not need to be done again. I can understand that the producers wanted to do a “before Monsters INC” story. That’s fine. I thought it was interesting to see life outside of Monsters INC. But I still think it could have been done better.

I’m sad that I didn’t enjoy it as much as I wanted to. I think I’m just going to pretend that the movie never existed and go on loving the Monsters INC that I know. I love you Boo, you’re awesome.

    1. Thanks! Yeah, in general I don’t think sequels can compare to the originals. There were good parts to this movie, I just ended up focusing more on the negative aspects of it! 🙂
