Gene and I watch a British “quiz” show called QI, that has a lot of interesting information. On one of the episodes, I learned an interesting fact about weddings in the past.
Have you ever heard the term “knobstick wedding?” It’s pretty much the equivalent of a shotgun wedding. In the past, if a woman had a baby out of wedlock, and the parish knew who the father was, the parish would attempt to marry the couple. They would threaten, and basically force, the man to marry the woman with a club known as a knobstick. Thus, “knobstick wedding” came about.
Little side note, the first record of the term “tying the knot” is in 1717.
And there are some very quick facts about marriage. Now go out there and sound smart!
