Today I started re-playing Mario 64. My family got the game when I was in 1st or 2nd grade and I have never beaten it. The farthest I’ve gotten was 78 stars. It has been my goal for a while now that before I die I need to beat that game. After randomly thinking about it today, I decided to start playing it again, see if I can get any farther. I restarted at the beginning so I can get the full experience. I figured I could share my progress on my blog, one star at a time.
I only got one star today, Big Bob-omb on the Summit. This is the first star you get in the game. It’s in the Bob-omb world: green grass, lots of little bombs running around, and water balloons shooting down at you from the sky.
My first thoughts when playing Mario 64 was “this controller is really weird.” I couldn’t figure out where to put my hands. It’s so funny to think that this was the first controller I ever used and back then I was so comfortable with it and now it seems so clunky. My second thought was “it is very hard to control Mario.” I had Mario running all over the place, falling down ledges, running into bad guys. I feel like once he starts running, which is almost immediately after you make him move, it’s hard to stop him. When I would try to stop him he’d go sliding, which is not what I wanted. It’s just gonna take me some time to get used to it but I think I can get it.
Another thing I noticed in the game was that there were a lot of signs with the same information. It was a bit repetitive. Gene said it was because the game designers wanted to make sure if a player missed a sign, he would still know what was going on. So that made more sense once he said that.
Overall, the game play was a bit frustrating but very fun. I love seeing stuff from my childhood so this was quite enjoyable for me. In order to get the star I had to run up the mountain and beat Big Bob-omb. It was way easier to beat him than I thought it would be. He moves so slowly that it’s fairly easy to get behind him and pick him up. I liked how after picking him up and throwing him three times the challenge was over.
I know the game is going to get harder but this was a great start to it. I’m going to try to get a star at least once a week so look out for more of these posts. Have any tips for when I play? Let me know, I’d love to have them!
