What I like Wednesday: Our Flag Means Death

Our Flag Means Death is a new show on HBO that has swept the nation, and possibly the world. I didn’t think I would like it. I watched the first episode and just felt “meh” about it. It wasn’t really my humor and I didn’t really understand what this show was or was going for. But for some reason, I went back, and I’m so glad I did. This show, while violent and bloody at times, is lovely. The characters are interesting, the relationships between the characters are interesting and sweet, and the story is something I can’t say I’ve seen before. The show drew me in and wouldn’t let me go. I’m hooked and a life long supporter. If piracy was a valid job opportunity, I’d tell you I was off to become a pirate after watching this show.

Our Flag Means Death is about a gentleman pirate, Stede; his crew; and the adventures (or misadventures) that they go on. Turns out Stede is based off of a real historical person by the same name. I don’t want to give too much away so please go watch it if you’re looking for a show to tug at your heart strings in a way you don’t expect. It sneaks up on you. If you like Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby (and who doesn’t), then you have two reasons to like the show from the get go.

Did a lot of the humor wash over me? Definitely. I’m not into dark humor generally so I didn’t laugh as much as I know my friends did with this show. But it doesn’t mean it didn’t strike a chord in me, cause it definitely did. I felt so passionate about this show that I wrote myself a quick fan fic with an alternate ending so that I could feel peace. Ask Shari, for an entire weekend I kept telling her cryptic things about the show and how it got me. “It got me, Shari. IT GOT ME!” I’d say to her. And then, “I need to work on my fan fic.” Hahaha. Thank goodness my friend, Mel, had seen the whole show around the same time I did so I got to talk to her about it and let out some of the pent up emotions.

Once you’ve finished the show, go look up fan art, there’s some great stuff out there. I am both excited and very nervous about future seasons. Come on writers, do me good! So go check out Our Flag Means Death if you want caring, quirky, and bad at their job pirates.

  1. I watched the trailer and it looks like a great show! It’s funny that this just came up because I’m in the process of putting together a pirate themed dramatic play tub for Emily and Ollie. You’ll love all the stuff I’ve put in it!
